HOW IT ALL BEGAN
After graduating with his Masters degree in Studio Music and Jazz from the Frost school of music in Miami, Florida, Paul moved to Austin, Texas and has quickly become one of the city’s first call trombonists. He is currently playing and touring with musical groups; The Polyphonic Spree, Progger(an offshoot of Snarky Puppy), The Jack Burton trio, and Summit Recording artists Jazzbonez among many others in the Austin area. Paul Deemer began his educational career during the fall of 2014 as Professor/Lecturer of Jazz Trombone at Texas State University. In November 2014, Professor Deemer had the honor of conducting one of the region 26 all-region big bands in Austin and was also selected to give a masterclass at the renowned Booker T. Washington High School of Performing Arts in Dallas. Paul can regularly be seen leading his own group at the Elephant Room and the Brass House, locally in Austin, Texas. Past notable mentions include performing with Frankie Valli in San Antonio and Austin in 2015, performing in the horn section for The Walkmen at the 2014 FFF fest, and performing in the Grooveline Horn section for The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band in Shreveport, Louisiana and Austin, Texas in 2014.
MORE ABOUT PAUL DEEMER
In 2004, Paul attended the University of Arizona for his Bachelors degree in trombone performance and studied under the tutelage of professors Tom Ervin, Jeff Haskell, and Moisés Paiewonsky. He was a member of the U of A wind ensemble and played lead trombone in the top jazz band there all four years of his undergraduate studies. As a freelance trombonist in Tucson, Paul played in a variety of jazz, latin, and pop groups gaining him the opportunity to share the stage with Pete Christlieb, Ed Shaugnessy, Andy Martin, and Brice Winston to name a few. He was also a member of the rock band Seven to Blue, led by Sergio Mendoza(Calexico, Sergio y la Orchestra).
In 2008 Paul was winner of the ETW National Jazz Solo Trombone Competition in Washington DC and was runner-up at the ITF Carl Fontana International Jazz Competition held in Salt Lake City, Utah. After completing his Bachelors degree in Arizona, Paul moved on to earn his Masters Degree in Studio Performance and Jazz at the renowned Frost School of Music in Miami, Florida. He was a member of the Down Beat award winning Frost Concert Jazz and Salsa Bands for both years of his masters degree tenure and was a member of the Frost Jazz Sextet, the flagship jazz combo of the school of music, for three semesters.
While at the University of Miami, Paul studied under professors Dante Luciani, Chuck Bergeron, Greg Gisbert, Jason Carder, and Whit Sidener. Paul was also a member of the prestigious Mancini Institute Orchestra, under the direction of the Dean of the Frost School of Music, Shelly Berg. As a member of the Mancini Orchestra, Paul played in the backing band for numerous internationally acclaimed artists including John Pizzarelli, Bruce Hornsby, Patti Austin, Gary Burton, Sammy Figueroa, Arturo Sandoval, John Secada, Steve Miller, Ricky Scaggs, Will Lee, Dave Grusin, and Nestor Torres.
In 2010 Paul was runner up in the ITF J.J. Johnson jazz trombone competition which was held in Austin, Texas where he subsequently moved to work as a freelance musician in the greater Austin area. Mr. Deemer is currently a student of international Jazz artists/educators Andre Hayward and Willie Thomas and is also giving private lessons from his home studio in addition to teaching at Texas state University.
